U.S. Virgin Islands Projects
Welcome to the site for the U.S. Virgin Islands Alternative Energy Plants Project. In August 2009, Alpine Energy Group, a Denver, Colorado-based developer, signed two 20-year Power Purchase Agreements with the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) and two 20-year Solid Waste Management Service Agreements with the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (WMA).
Alpine will build, own, and operate two alternative energy facilities that will serve the residents of St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. This site will provide project-specific information over the course of development and construction and will be updated frequently as additional information becomes available.
Project Information
The alternative energy facilities to be built on St. Croix and St. Thomas, will convert an estimated 146,000 tons per year of municipal solid waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) using WastAway Services® technology, which will be combined with petroleum coke as fuel to generate steam and electric power.
The projects will divert essentially all the municipal solid waste from landfills, while providing electricity to the Virgin Islands, thereby providing a source of reliable energy at a stable price, while also improving the environment by diverting waste from landfills and using a renewable source of energy.
In addition to the environmental benefits of the Project, there will be economic development benefits with the addition of up to 280 jobs during construction and more than 100 permanent jobs once the facilities are in operation. AEG will also be involved in the development of energy and engineering technology centers on each of the University of Virgin Islands campuses and is expected to support the Islands community through a combination of scholarships and grants, among other benefits. |
